What Is an ADA Room?

The term “ADA room” is a practical description, not a product certification. For a workplace meeting room or pod, accessibility is a system of connected decisions. The visitor must be able to follow an accessible route, approach the door, open it, enter, maneuver inside, reach the controls, and use the table or seating arrangement.

The 2010 ADA Standards describe requirements for turning space, doors, thresholds, operable parts, and reach ranges. They do not turn a room into a universally compliant product simply because a supplier uses the words “ADA” in a model name. If a supplier describes an offering as an “ADA compliant meeting pod,” treat that phrase as a starting point for drawing and site review, not as a substitute for it. Use the 2010 ADA Standards as the U.S. reference, then confirm the final design with the architect, accessibility consultant, or authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).

For Canada and Australia, use the relevant local accessibility and building requirements. The U.S. ADA benchmark is useful for early planning, but it is not a substitute for local review.

How the Aura Series Can Be Configured for Accessibility

Aura is a B&H design-first series, not a product family limited to one ADA model. A regular Aura meeting pod can serve standard meeting use, while an accessible configuration is planned around wheelchair entry, maneuvering space, furniture, controls, and the surrounding route.

B&H’s regular accessible range is L and XL. Smaller standard footprints are not the recommended starting point for wheelchair access because the door approach and interior maneuvering can become unnecessarily tight. A custom size can be discussed when the site, furniture, occupancy, or local review requires a different proportion.

Aura is a higher-end, specification-led series, so an accessible configuration is quoted around the project rather than sold as a one-size-fits-all online item. The quote can account for the selected dimensions, furniture, technology, delivery route, installation, and local review requirements.

The dimensions above are external product dimensions. They do not, by themselves, prove that the finished interior contains an ADA turning circle or T-turn. Request the current plan or CAD drawing and ask the project team to mark the clear interior dimensions, door maneuvering space, table position, and route to the entrance.

ADA Turning Radius, Turning Circle, and T-Turn

People often say “60-inch ADA turning radius,” but the U.S. standard describes a 60-inch diameter circular turning space. Section 304.3.1 also recognizes a T-shaped turning space within a 60-inch square, with the arms and base at least 36 inches wide. These layouts allow a wheelchair user to change direction without relying on a series of tight corrections.

The turning-space check belongs inside the finished pod and in the approach to the door. A large external footprint can still fail the practical test if the table, seat, door swing, power cabinet, or another fixed element blocks the clear space. A smaller-looking plan can work better when the clear floor area is placed correctly. This is why a supplier’s “ADA-ready” label should be followed by a drawing review, not treated as the final answer.

When reviewing an Aura layout, request these marked dimensions:

• The clear interior area available for a circular turning space or T-turn.
• The clear opening of the door with the door open 90 degrees. The 2010 Standards use 32 inches as the minimum clear opening for an accessible door in the conditions described in Section 404.2.3.
• The maneuvering clearance on the approach side of the door.
• The position of the table, seat, and any fixed equipment relative to the turning space.
• The accessible route from the main circulation path to the pod.

Why a Zero-Threshold Entry Matters

Aura ADA-L and Aura ADA-XL are configured without a threshold or base floor. The pod is installed directly on the finished floor, allowing a wheelchair to roll into the room without crossing a raised sill or a separate internal platform.

That detail removes one common entry barrier, but it does not complete the accessibility review. The finished floor must be level enough for the installation, the route must remain clear, and the door must still provide the required opening and maneuvering clearance. Under Section 404.2.5 of the 2010 ADA Standards, thresholds at doorways are limited to 1/2 inch in the conditions covered by the standard. A no-threshold configuration gives the project team a simpler starting point, while the complete installation remains the responsibility of the project review.

What Else Should Be Checked Before Calling a Pod Accessible?

Use this checklist when comparing a supplier drawing with the office plan.

The door, hardware, table, and control specifications must be confirmed for the selected configuration. For example, the 2010 Standards address door operating force and the reach range for operable parts; those requirements should be checked against the actual hardware and not assumed from the series name.

Accessible Meeting Pod Seating and Work Surfaces

Accessible meeting pod seating is more than adding an empty space beside a standard chair. The wheelchair position must connect to the route, the turning space, and the table. A buyer should ask for the clear knee and toe space, table height, approach direction, and the location of any leg, pedestal, power module, or storage component.

If the pod is used for video calls, also check whether the accessible position has a usable camera angle, microphone position, lighting control, and power access. These are workplace-use questions rather than a substitute for the ADA review, but they determine whether the room works in the meeting that motivated the purchase.

U.S., Canadian, and Australian Projects

For U.S. projects, the 2010 ADA Standards provide the primary accessibility reference used in this guide. The final decision still depends on the building type, project scope, adopted codes, and AHJ review.

Canada and Australia require their own local accessibility and building-code checks. The same Aura configuration may need different documentation, approach clearances, signage, electrical details, or approval steps in another jurisdiction. 1. Project country, city, and building type.
2. A floor plan or the available width, depth, ceiling height, and approach dimensions.
3. Whether the project needs Aura ADA-L, Aura ADA-XL, or a custom proportion.
4. Door, table, seating, power, ventilation, lighting, and video-conference requirements.
5. Any ramp, floor transition, delivery route, or installation constraint.
6. The accessibility standard or consultant comments that apply to the project.
